An English teacher was explaining to his students the concept of gender association in the English language. He noted how hurricanes at one time were given only female names, and how ships and planes were usually referred to as &quotshe.” One of the students raised her hand and asked, &quotWhat gender is a computer?”
The teacher wasn’t certain. So he divided the class into two groups: males in one, females in the other, and asked them to decide if a computer should be masculine or feminine. Both groups were asked to give four reasons for their recommendations.

The group of women concluded that computers should be referred to as masculine because:

1. In order to get their attention, you have to turn them on.

2. They have a lot of data but are still clueless.

3. They are supposed to help you solve your problems, but half the time, they ARE the problem.

4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that, if you had waited a little longer, you could have had a better model.

The men, on the other hand, decided that computers should definitely be referred to as feminine because:

1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic.

2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else.

3. Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for later retrieval.

4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

How our Teenage Years Impact our Golden Years

We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future. – Franklin D. Roosevelt

Probably the most important thing you can do on your own to improve your life and live a happier, healthier life is to be able to develop and keep a positive psychological mindset. The process of developing an attitude that will help you later on in life should be nurtured during your more youthful years. How you learn skills when you are younger to help you handle adversities and strategies through life will become all important when you reach a time that requires those skills.
We know that exercise is important for teenagers and sport is an ideal outlet for all that energy. It doesn’t matterwhy teenagers are attracted to sport. In fact, for many of them it is seen as an opportunity to become popular and more attractive. As parents we shouldn’t knock that reason! Regardless of why they decide to participate, there is a range of benefits for them.

Social benefits for teenagers and sport
First of all, consider the social benefits for teenagers and sport. So much of the average teenager’s time is spent alone, whether it’s in front of a TV screen, or playing computer games or surfing the net. Although this may bring them into ‘virtual’ contact with others, it’s not as beneficial as face-to-face, social interaction. Once they get into a sport, they’ll have lots of opportunities to meet others and develop their social and interpersonal skills.

Health benefits for teenagers and sport.
These days we are all much more sedentary: we sit around much more than we used to, at the expense of physical movement. Health specialists are concerned about the rising problem of obesity, and this affects our teenagers and younger children too. Movement is good for our teenagers, and sport is ideal for those who balk at the thought of ‘working out’. Taking part in a sport can have a great pay-off in terms of health.

Family benefits for teenagers and sport
Many parents today find it difficult to communicate with their teenagers, and sport is ideal for bringing the two together. I’ve spent years driving my teenagers to their different sports and watching them perform. Believe me – so long as you’re not ‘pushy’ and intrusive – they’ll appreciate your interest. They will know you love them and want to help.
How else can parents get involved with their teenagers and sport? There are many ways, such as:
providing the right kit and equipment
helping with travel arrangements
cheering from the sidelines
fundraising, and more
And you’ll find that after a game or session – when kids are on a natural ‘high’ – they are much more communicative. This is ideal time for chatting and building that relationship. You or your kids may have doubts about their ability to join a team. If your teenagers are not the competitive types, why not consider other activities that can be enjoyed just for the sake of it? Examples are archery, swimming, water sports, and hill walking and climbing.

Behavior benefits for teenagers and sport
There are other good reasons why teenagers and sport should be encouraged. Studies both in America and Europe show that teens who take part in sport are much less likely to be involved in undesirable behaviors such as:
smoking
taking drugs
promiscuity
alcohol abuse
and dropping out of school or college.
Involvement in sport really does get your teenagers away from the couch and TV screen and into something that is both healthy and sociable. Why not take action today to help bring your teenagers and sport together?

Now that we know exactly how important physical exercise is for the betterment of our lives. Lets examine the other side of the equation, exercising your mind and its relation to your overall mental well-being. Then, as you go through the obstacles and hurdles of life, you are able to reassess that mission and reconfigure it for where you presently are on life’s path.
Living a full, rich life should be a goal that you not only strive for, but work toward by doing everything possible to make sure you are healthy, both in body and mind to withstand the harshest of times. The most crucial tools to maintain an optimistic: clinical analysis suggests that “retirement” as our forefathers perceived it truly isn’t a good thing for us to maintain a positive mental attitude regarding life. Below are some beneficial resources for you to live by if living a complete, rich life is of interest to you.

Keep Busy – A rocking chair isn’t the way to achieve “Fountain of Youth” effects during the aging process. We now know that continuing to keep active, both in body and mind is the ultimate way to live a lengthy and successful life.

Write Your own personal Goals – Baby boomers getting into their 60s by no means expected to age, so they’re now looking for ways to keep their youth – but most are trying to preserve their youth with plastic surgery, pills or surrounding themselves with youthful “things” such as a bright red sports car. Writing your own personal goals for the rest of your life is strengthening and will additionally help to build your mental aptitude just like you would build your muscles by exercising.

Cultivate Wholesome Relationships – The relationships you develop with family and friends can make a real difference in how you view the rest of your life. Taking trips and learning new things are all better done with someone you care about than alone. Undertake the steps needed to develop a positive mental attitude that may help you through the aging process gently and optimistically.

Defying the aging process mentally is important, however you also need to know what to do to defy it on the outside as well. Your skin tell a lot about your lifestyle therefore it is important to eat healthy, exercise, protect your skin from too much sun, and importantly use natural skin care products to keep wrinkles and fine lines at bay. Learning to find the best quality skin care will determine how you look on the outside, which will greatly complement your positive mindset. Finding the best anti aging skin care product with natural ingredients will enhance your appearance so you will look good on the outside while feeling great too. You can surelydefy the aging processand live a long, healthy life.

Rid Yourself of Negative Thoughts and Take Control of Your Life

I am lord of myself, accountable to none- Benjamin Franklin

Whenever I feel a negative thought try to creep into my thought process, I flip the switch. I know what you’re thinking…it’s easy for me to say, right? Well, it can actually be as easy as flipping that switch in your mind. Negative thoughts are an actual poison. A negative thought can ruin your entire day and week and can even make you sick. So, instead of allowing those negative thoughts into our minds, let’s look at how we can flip the switch and turn our thoughts into positive healthy ones.
First off, we all have a choice when we awaken each day. We can actually determine if our day will be a good one or a bad one. Start off your day with a smile. Yes, it’s as easy as forcing yourself to smile and be happy that you are alive, awake and actually have the ability to get out of bed. That is just the beginning. Consider developing an affirmation that you can see and repeat each morning. Mine is this: Today I choose to be a happy possessor of a grateful spirit. I can’t take full credit for that that affirmation it is one that I read in a fabulous book called The Traveler’s Gift. It’s a great affirmation and one that I try to follow each and everyday. Notice how I mentioned the word – ‘try’. Yes, we all have our bad days, but it’s how we handle them that will determine if we will allow a ‘rotten situation’ ruin our entire day and week.
You may have experienced a situation at work that caused the negative thoughts to creep into your head. Perhaps you were assigned a project and at first you thought, I can definitely do this. But soon after, negative thoughts took over and made you feel incompetent and worthless. Before you know it, you are sabotaging the project even though you have the ability to complete this project. Why does this happen? Perhaps we feel we are not worthy of praise? Perhaps we don’t think we are good enough? Or is it that we have heard it in our past and truly believed the negative talk. Look – it is time to shut down that negative talk in your head. You are worthy and are a wonderful person! If you have to repeat that to yourself each and every day and minute of each day, then do it! That is a perfect affirmation to start today!
Some of the most intense negative thought processes are experienced by teens. Many will think their lives are not as good as some of their peers, are simply unhappy or experience peer pressure that leads them to anger and depression. Many will say that they ‘hate their lives’ or that ‘they don’t want to live anymore’. While they may not truly mean those words, it is still a sign which requires immediate intervention. The thought can become a seed which can grow into the act itself.
Do you find yourself running in circles? Are you busy taking care of the family? Are you busy multi-tasking into the late hours of the evening, neglecting yourself all along? You’re not alone. Too often we get so involved in what needs to get accomplished that we put ourselves on hold.
It’s no wonder with all that we do that we don’t find the time to relax or nurture our bodies, mind and spirit. This lack of time often leads to feelings of frustration, overwhelm and sense of imbalance. Below I share some tips that will help you make the time that is necessary to take care of YOU!

Meal times- these are the times where we tend to run in circles, instead let’s plan. If you have to prepare school lunches, consider preparing a week’s worth and freeze them. For lunches, and dinners double your recipes and freeze half of those casseroles, soups and burgers for another meal. Plan your meals and get your family involved.

Treat yourself- this doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Meet a friend for coffee, join a book club, a craft club, etc. Consider doing something you’ve always dreamed of, such as skydiving, driving a race car or ballroom dance classes.

Schedule some time away with your significant other- this can simply be a lunch date, or dinner date. Make arrangements for your children to be picked up from school or looked after so you can truly enjoy your time. A mere walk around the park or going to see a movie will help you relax while spending important time with the one you love. Try to also spend a weekend away together occasionally, after all to strengthen the relationship it is necessary to focus on our partners.

Organize quiet time at home- turn off the television or other distractions and simply enjoy the peace. How about an at home spa treatment? This can be truly enjoyable for you and if you have children, they will love it too. My kids love to give us manicures and massages, even if they are not professionals. You’d be amazed at what some aromatherapy candles and soft music will do to ease your tension.

Go outside- sounds easy enough, right? You’d be amazed at how occupied we can get that we neglect to enjoy the fresh air. Try to get outside at least once a day, walk the dog, or simply sit under a tree and enjoy the day. If you have children, take them to the park and enjoy their company.

If you find yourself overwhelmed or that your life is out of control, or you place others before yourself, it is time to create some time and space for yourself. Taking this necessary time not only allows you to renew your energy it will also help in the healing and finding the peace your mind and spirit requires. Remember if you don’t care yourself, then you will be completely useless to those who depend on you. Honoring yourself helps you to discover your truth, and experience a sense of peace, wholeness, purpose and balance.
There is so much value in getting clear about what you need to function at your optimal level during that day. Whether you have kids, a demanding job, or are just “so busy” there always is time for what is important to you. So the question is, how important is feeling well to you?
Your non-negotiables are unique to you. Begin by asking yourself these questions: What lifts you?
This is the stuff that results in a lost sense of time. It could be meditation, yoga, reading fiction or memoirs, dancing, spending time with certain people, writing, volunteering, music or concerts. What movement feels good to you?
Our bodies are meant to move. Try morning stretches, bundling up and walking outdoors, dancing, yoga, taking a class, or even laying down. We are wired to seek pleasure, not pain. Why move the body in a way that you despise? Sometimes the antidote to feeling “stuck” is as simple as moving the body to get energy flowing. Movement can be medicine. How do you prefer to unwind?
Putting pajama pants on, making some tea, renting a TV series, sitting in a sauna, stretching, turning off distractions. What signals relaxation for you? How much rest do you need?
This is important. For some people the difference between 6 hours a night versus 7 hours a night can make a big difference for energy levels throughout the day. There is no textbook requirement really. Some people feel their best at 5 hours every night. For other it is closer to 8 or 9 hours. What style of eating feels good to you?
Do you like to eat meals prepared at home? Do feel well with 3 meals a day or with snacks in between? Do you prefer one meal in solitude? Do you prefer to eat with friends and family? Is there a certain dietary theory that really resonates with you, gives you energy, and nourishes your body? How do you center yourself?
Again meditation, some kind of spiritual practice, affirmations, conversation with grounded people, sharing a long hug with your spouse or your sweetie, playing or performing music, focusing on your connection to the world around you through nature or prayer, can all be deeply nourishing. What is your “breaking-point” as far as being productive goes?
Do you glaze over after 6pm? Are you most effective in the morning? Perhaps designating a time to turn your phone and computer off by a certain time can help set healthy boundaries. What do you do that is strictly for the sake of pleasure and having fun?
Things can get a little heavy when our serious side takes over. Think light. Who cracks you up? Are there blogs that you follow that bring a smile to your face? Playing with children, dancing in your living room, or allowing yourself to be a goofball are all just as nutritious as apples, kale, and quinoa.
Now pick one thing you know helps you stay balanced. Don’t judge it. Go write in in your planner for one week as a reminder. Then do it.
Notice if your “non-negotiables” feel selfish to you. Chances are, they are not. Self-care is one of the first things to fly out the window, during times of busyness or stress. Remember, we are more effective when we schedule time for rest and relaxation. When we give ourselves time to rest, we actually look forward to being productive or socializing. When we run ourselves down, we are always looking forward to rest. Where is your balance?
The moral of this story is that you can certainly flip the switch. A negative thought can quickly be turned around into a positive reinforcement. It’s up to each and every one of us to ensure that any hint of negativity is purged from our thought process. Avoiding this process from the very beginning will help you live happier and healthier lives. It all begins with a positive mental attitude. Success is achieved with positivity and from positivity healthy relationships are cultivated. What will you choose to do today? Remember we all have a choice, will you wake up with a smile or a frown? The choice is yours.

Dangers of Cell Phone Usage

Dangers of Cell Phone Usage
Science has shown increased risk of brain tumors from use ofcellphones, as well as increased risk of eye cancer, salivary glandtumors, testicular cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and leukemia, Thepublic must be informed.” – August ’09 report on cell phone hazards
As of June 2009, there were an estimated 4.3 billion cell phone (mobile phones) users
worldwide. In the United States, it is estimated that more than fifty percent of children
own their own personal cell phones.
A growing body of scientific evidence shows that there are significant health hazards
to their use, including brain tumors; damage to DNA, an undisputed cause of cancer;
blood-brain barriers (BBB) leakage (BBB protects the brain from many molecules
that are toxic to the brain; and male fertility damage by cell phone use because men,
especially teenagers, put their cell phones in their pockets when not in use, causing a
deleterious effect on sperm count and sperm motility.
Introduction
On May 6, 2010, the President’ s Cancer Panel reported that “ the true burden of
environmentally induced cancers has been grossly underestimated” and named cell
phones and other wireless technologies as potential causes of cancer that demand further
research and precaution.
On June 15, 2010, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted to require retailers
to post in their stores notices on the level of radiation emitted by the cell phones they
offer. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said he would sign the legislation once it
reaches his desk. The proposed ordinance would not ban the sale of certain cell phones,
but would require retailers to provide the “specific absorption rate” – a measurement
of radiation registered with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) – next to
phones displayed in their shops. Consumers also would be notified about where they can
get more educational materials.
On June 30, 2010, U.S. Representative Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) stated that he will
introduce a bill for a federal research program on the affects of cell phone radiation on
users. The bill will also call for a warning label on cell phones.
Telecommunications Act of 1996
The telecommunications industry helped write Section 704 of the Telecommunications
Act of 1996 (Act), 47 U.S.C. § 332, Under the Act, communities have rights over the
general placement, construction, and modification of cell phone towers, but cannot ban
them altogether. Nor can they set zoning regulations based on “the environmental effects
of radio-frequency emissions, to the extent that such facilities comply with Federal
Communications Commission (FCC) regulations concerning such emissions.” It is still
in dispute as to whether Section 704 covers the environmental (health) effects. It will
ultimately be up to a federal court to decide whether a city or town can refuse a request
to build a tower or other installation based on the health effects of radio-frequency (RF)
emissions.
As of now, the FCC standards are based only on the thermal effects or the RF’s ability
to heat tissue, not on non-thermal effects. The FCC has neither the money, manpower
nor inclination to properly monitor radiation output of tens of thousands of commercial
wireless installations and admits that it does not have the ability to physical test radiation
output.
Catch 22
A plaintiff seeking to challenge an industry member’s non-thermal health hazards of
a cell phone or cell phone tower faces a Catch 22 situation. All the industry member
has to prove is that it complies with FCC regulations concerning thermal emissions.
The FCC has no regulations concerning non-thermal emissions. As there is seemingly
contradictory research on whether non-thermal emissions are hazardous to health, the
courts so far have ruled for the industry.
However, an August 25, 2009 report, Cellphones and Brain Tumors: Cellphones
and Brain Tumors: 15 Reasons for Concern. Science, Spin and the Truth Behind
Interphone (Report), endorsed by more than 40 scientists and officials from 14 countries,
found that: studies that are independent of the telecom industry consistently show there
is a “significant” risk for brain tumors from cell phone use; the electromagnetic field
(EMF) exposure limits advocated by industry and used by governments are based on a
false premise that a cell phone’s EMF has no biological effects except for heating; and the
danger of brain tumors from cell phone use is highest in children, and the younger a child
is when he/she starts using a cell phone, the higher the risk.
The Report persuasively argues that if there is any inconsistency among the research, it
is between industry-funded research with flawed design study protocols and independent
research. The industry-funded research tends to underestimate the risk of brain tumors
from cell phone use while the independent research tends to show a significant risk
of brain tumors from cell phone use. In addition, the Report points out that there are
thousands of studies showing biological effects — non-thermal effects from EMF — at
exposures far below the thermal effects authorized by FCC regulations.
The Report further points out that Dr. George Carlo, leader of the Cellular
Telecommunications Industry Association’s (CTIA) $25 million research project found a
statistically significant doubling of brain cancer risk.
In addition, independent studies conducted by Professor Lennart Hardell in Sweden
found significant increased risk of brain tumors from ten or more years of cell phone use
with the risk of brain cancer increasing by 5 percent; for every year of cell phone use the
risk of brain cancer increases by 8 percent; after ten years or more years of digital cell
phone use, there was a 280 percent increased risk of brain cancer; and for digital cell
phone users who were teenagers or younger when they first started using cell phones,
there was a 420 percent increased risk of cancer. This suggests that the two highest risks
are ten or more years of cell phone use and the cell phone was held on the same side of
the head where the tumor was diagnosed. Finally, the telecommunications industry, on
the one hand, disputes the non-thermal risk of cell phones, but yet, their user manuals
warn customers to keep cell phone away from the body even when the cell phone is not
in use. Are these industry members erring on the side of caution or are the warnings an
implicit admission that a health hazard exists? For example, Nokia 1100 warns: “This
product meets RF exposure guidelines . . . when positioned at least 1.5 cm (about 1 inch)
away from the body . . . and should position the product at least 1.5 cm away from your
body.”
Similarly, Motorola V195 GSM manual warns to keep the mobile device 2.5 cm
from the body. And the BlackBerry 8300 manual warns to keep the device at least 0.98
from the body and “should not be worn or carried on the body.” But how many owners
read their manuals? If the warnings were meant to be read, they should be on the device
itself. And if these companies were truly concerned about safety, the device could be
manufactured so it cannot be used closer than the “safe” limits.
Children’s Use of Cell Phones
In April 2009, the European Parliament by a vote of 559 to 22 (8 abstentions) voted for
a set of changes based on the health concerns associated with EMF.
Among the actions called for are a review of the scientific basis and adequacy of
the EMF exposure limits, finance a wide ranging awareness campaign aimed at young
people to minimize their exposure to cell phone radiation, to increase research funding,
condemnation of marketing campaigns for the sale of cell phones designed solely for
children, require labeling requirements on all wireless operated devices, and expressing
concern that insurance companies are tending to exclude coverage for the risk of EMF
liability insurance.
There have also been numerous governmental warnings about children’s use of cell
phones.
France is about to make it illegal to market cell phones to children and recently banned
cell phones in elementary schools, is requiring manufacturers to develop a new kind
of cell phone for children under eight, which would allow only the receipt and sending
of text messages so the cell phone would not be placed at the side of the head. Russian
officials have recommended that children under the age of 18 not use cell phones at all.
Similarly, the United Kingdom, Israel, Belgium, Germany, and India have discouraged
the use of cell phones by children.
Toronto’s Department of Public Health has advised that children under eight should
only use cell phones in emergencies and teenagers should limit calls to ten minutes.
The Report recommends a number of personal actions parents can take to reduce
their children’s exposure to cell phone radiation. Children should use a wired headset
(not a wireless headset like Bluetooth), or use the speaker-phone mode, or only send
text messages. The cell phone should be kept away from the body or use a belt holster
designed to shield the body from cell phone radiation when not in use. Avoid cell phone
use in a moving car, train, or bus, or in buildings — particularly with steel structures -
- as this will increase the power of the cell phone’s radiation. Keep the cell phone off
until you want to see who called. Whenever possible, use a corded land-line phone
instead of a wireless phone. Do not allow children under 18 to use a cell phone except in
emergencies. I do not underestimate the difficulty parents will have in enforcing this last
recommendation.
Shifting the Burden of Proof
Who should have the burden of proof on the health hazards of cell phones: the industry
or the individual user? Assuming for argument’s sake that the scientific evidence is
insufficient, inconclusive or uncertain, if there are reasonable scientific grounds for
concern about the potentially dangerous effects on the environment, human, animal
or plant health, the burden should shift to the industry. After all, a drug cannot be sold
without proof that it is safe, nor can a food be launched without prior approval. Yet, we
can use mobile telephony, including masts, and introduce WiFi and cell phones, without
restrictions around our children, a double-standard gone insane.
Report Recommendations
The Report recommends the following:
* Ban marketing campaigns of cell phones designed solely for children.
* Require proof of liability insurance coverage for potential health risks associated
with cell phones and similar wireless devices prior to their being offered for sale.
* Review the scientific basis and adequacy of the EMF exposure limits.
* Allocate research funding independent of industry funds and influence, to evaluate
long-term effects from cell phones and other harmful effects from different sources of
EMF, particularly where children are involved.
* Finance a wide-ranging awareness campaigns aimed at young people to minimize
their exposures to cell phone radiation.
* Require warning labels on all wireless devices.
* Make available maps showing exposure to high-voltage power lines, radio frequency
and microwaves from telecommunications cell towers, radio repeaters, and telephone
antennas.
Conclusion
The following is a quote from L.Lloyd Morgan, the main editor of the Report:
“Exposure to cell phone radiation is the largest human health experiment ever
undertaken, without informed consent, and has over 4 billion participants enrolled.
Science has shown increased risk of brain tumors from use of cellphones, as well as
increased risk of eye cancer, salivary gland tumors, testicular cancer, non-Hodgkin’s
lymphoma and leukemia, The public must be informed.” San Francisco’s proposed
legislation and Rep. Kucinich’s proposed bill requiring retailers to post in their stores
notices on the level of radiation emitted by the cell phones they offer is a modest
beginning to warn the public about a serious health problem. It is better to be safe than
sorry.”

Why you need Vitamin C

There are a number of benefits that are obtained from consuming vitamin C. The
most familiar benefit is the immune boosting qualities it imparts. Most people are aware
that consuming foods that are high in vitamin C can help reduce the chances of becoming
ill, particularly during cold and flu season. In fact, many cold medicines and treatments
are made with vitamin C. Vitamin C has immune boosting properties which make it
an excellent choice for anyone that wants to fight colds, infections and other diseases.
Besides the boosting of the immune system, vitamin C is also known to help prevent a
number of ailments which include cancer and strokes. Eye health is greatly improved
by eating vitamin C. Furthermore, it has even been proven that vitamin C helps to fight
wrinkles. Thus, there are many benefits in consuming this vitamin on a regular basis.
There are so many foods that contain vitamin C that it shouldn’t be hard for people to
get the required amounts in order to improve their health. It is recommended that adults
obtain 500 milligrams of vitamin C on a daily basis. The required 500 milligrams can
be obtained by taking a supplement or by eating an array of fruits and vegetables which
contain vitamin C. In general, it is always best to obtain the vitamins that the body
needs from natural sources such as food. There is a large variety of food that people can
consume in order to obtain the benefits of vitamin C. Such fruits as oranges, grapefruit,
limes, strawberries, kiwi and cantaloupe contain high levels of vitamin C. Vegetables
such as peppers and potatoes contain elevated levels of vitamin C. By eating foods that
are high in vitamin C on a regular basis people can gradually build up their immune
system so that it is able to protect the body from something as small as the flu to more
serious conditions such as cancer.
Nearly everyone is aware that vitamin C is one of the most beneficial and popular
of all the vitamins. Many people are aware that this particular vitamin offers many health
benefits when consumed on a regular basis. Some people choose to consume foods that
are high in vitamin C while others take supplements which provide the recommended
daily dosage. There are numerous ways in which people are able to obtain the benefits of
vitamin C in order to make sure that their bodies are healthy and strong.
While Vitamin C offers many benefits it is important to note that this vitamin
disintegrates very easily. In order to maintain the health benefits of vitamin C it is very
important to prepare foods in the correct manner. If possible, try to consume natural
sources of vitamin C such as fruits and vegetables in their raw state. Cooking tends to
deplete fruits and vegetables of vitamin C tremendously. If cooking is desired it is best
to cook them for a minimum amount of time at low heat. Likewise, the best sources
of vitamin C are from foods that are in their natural state, foods that are free from
processing.

Mind vs. Body

Mind vs. Body: Which is a more powerful tool to lose weight
How many weight loss plans have you tried? Have you attempted all of the
fad diets, the strict diets that involved doctor’s supervision, diets assisted with over the
counter medication, and many others? If several diets have failed for you in the past
it may be time for something different. Instead of dieting, change your perspective by
focusing on whole foods. Whole foods consist of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
These healthy foods can be nature’s effective weight loss plan.
Think of the morning coffee or afternoon soda you drink. Chances are it is loaded
with high fructose corn syrup or another high carbohydrate sweetener. Even if you are
not drinking regular soda or blended coffees, chances are you are consuming plenty of
empty calories. These are calories that come with very little, if any, nutritional benefit.
Whole foods have far fewer calories and plenty of healthy benefits.
Many whole foods are full of healthy nutrients. Fruits and vegetables are high in
fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and are a lean source of protein. Whole grains are often high
in lean proteins and fiber. Nuts, seeds and many other natural foods have a long list of
health benefits. Fish and healthy oils can contain omega 3 fatty acids which can prevent
heard diseases and other issues.
One of the best advantages of whole foods is you can teach your taste buds what food
is supposed to taste like. So many of us are used to processed and packaged junk food
that we may have forgotten what food tastes like in its natural state. A TV dinner may be
convenient but those mashed potatoes, green beans and corn are a far cry from farm fresh
produce. Blanched green beans, grilled corn, or baked sweet potato fries can taste like the
actual food rather than frozen meals that may be full of sodium and empty calories.
A balanced diet that is based around whole foods often leads to you having more
energy. Whether it is from snacking on fresh vegetables throughout the day, starting off
with a batch of whole grains from rolled oats in the morning, or having a balanced and
healthy dinner most people just have more energy when they are eating natural foods.
This extra energy can let you get more exercise throughout the day and may leave you
with enough energy for a full workout before or after work. Sometimes all it takes to
jump start your diet is a little extra energy to get you moving more!
Weight loss plans can be helpful to many people. If you have tried several and
not been able to lose weight and keep it off it may be time to just change your attitude.
Learning to incorporate more whole foods into your diet can limit empty calories, add
extra nutrients, teach you to crave healthier foods, and give you more energy throughout
the day. Instead of counting carbs, fat or all calories it may be time to simply learn to eat
more natural, whole foods.

Movie News

Most of the time, child actors are precious and mannered and seem chosen based on their “cute” factor; rarely do they make much of an impact. Occasionally, though, someone comes along who seems wiser than that, sadder perhaps, or with untold depths. These people are full of promise. They are the ones that make us say, “She’s going places.”

Natalie Portman was one of those.

Her career now 17 years old, with more than 20 major feature films, she has more than lived up to that promise. She’s 29 now and an Oscar winner for ‘Black Swan,’ a polarizing movie of the kind that usually doesn’t win Oscars. She has worked with major international directors (Woody AllenTim BurtonAmos GitaiMilos Forman,Wong Kar-WaiWes Anderson and others). She has charmed art house crowds and multiplex crowds; she would be welcome at both snooty cocktail parties and at comic book conventions. She has been called this generation’s Audrey Hepburn, for her delicate, princess-like manner, but she’s also capable of something hilariously vulgar and lowbrow such as her infamous ‘SNL’ rap; she even managed to make Ashton Kutcher look good earlier this year in ‘No Strings Attached.’
She has the wisdom to choose her projects well, covering a wide range of topics — but rarely has a movie of hers come together so satisfyingly as with Luc Besson’s‘The Professional’ (aka ‘Léon’). It’s a pretty standard story of two opposites reluctantly thrown together in desperate circumstances, but Besson decided not to follow the usual formula in which one character is obnoxious. He had the strange idea to make both characters appealing. They’re direct physical opposites: One is a towering, nearly mute, extremely simple giant; the other is a small, chatty, scrappy cutie-pie. Throw in a terrific story and a terrifying villain (Gary Oldman), and you’ve got a pulp movie that holds up 17 years later.

It might have been one particular scene in that inspired such hope for Portman. It’s the scene in which she plays a “guessing game” with Léon (Jean Reno), dressing up and putting on a show as various celebrities (including Charlie Chaplin). The joke is that Léon only watches old musicals, so he doesn’t know who they’re supposed to be. (His blank, bewildered face always cracks me up.) Looking at the scene now, it’s easy to imagine a young girl with big dreams of making it in showbiz, strutting her stuff and showing her range, and it’s nice to know that this all paid off.

The scene was once a little disturbing, watching the 12- or 13-year-old Natalie doing her “sexy” Madonnaand Marilyn Monroe impressions, But now that she has grown up and turned out so well, it doesn’t seem that bad. Or maybe, looking back, it seems clear that Portman was always grown up.

06/13/2011 | Rid Yourself of Negative Thoughts and Take Control of Your Life!

Rid Yourself of Negative Thoughts and Take Control of Your Life!

“I am lord of myself, accountable to none”- Benjamin Franklin
Whenever I feel a negative thought try to creep into my thought process, Iflip the switch. I know what you’re thinking…it’s easy for me to say, right? Well, itcan actually be as easy as flipping that switch in your mind. Negative thoughts are anactual poison. A negative thought can ruin your entire day and week and can evenmake you sick. So, instead of allowing those negative thoughts into our minds, let’slook at how we can flip the switch and turn our thoughts into positive healthy ones.First off, we all have a choice when we awaken each day. We can actually determineif our day will be a good one or a bad one. Start off your day with a smile. Yes, it’s aseasy as forcing yourself to smile and be happy that you are alive, awake and actuallyhave the ability to get out of bed. That is just the beginning. Consider developingan affirmation that you can see and repeat each morning. Mine is this: Today Ichoose to be a happy possessor of a grateful spirit. I can’t take full credit for thatthat affirmation it is one that I read in a fabulous book called The Traveler’s Gift. It’s a great affirmation and one that I try to follow each and everyday. Notice howI mentioned the word – ‘try’. Yes, we all have our bad days, but it’s how we handlethem that will determine if we will allow a ‘rotten situation’ ruin our entire day andweek. You may have experienced a situation at work that caused the negativethoughts to creep into your head. Perhaps you were assigned a project and at firstyou thought, I can definitely do this. But soon after, negative thoughts took over andmade you feel incompetent and worthless. Before you know it, you are sabotagingthe project even though you have the ability to complete this project. Why does thishappen? Perhaps we feel we are not worthy of praise? Perhaps we don’t think weare good enough? Or is it that we have heard it in our past and truly believed thenegative talk. Look – it is time to shut down that negative talk in your head. You areworthy and are a wonderful person! If you have to repeat that to yourself each andevery day and minute of each day, then do it! That is a perfect affirmation to starttoday! Some of the most intense negative thought processes are experienced byteens. Many will think their lives are not as good as some of their peers, are simplyunhappy or experience peer pressure that leads them to anger and depression. Many will say that they ‘hate their lives’ or that ‘they don’t want to live anymore’.While they may not truly mean those words, it is still a sign which requiresimmediate intervention. The thought can become a seed which can grow into the actitself.Do you find yourself running in circles? Are you busy taking care of thefamily? Are you busy multi-tasking into the late hours of the evening, neglecting
yourself all along? You’re not alone. Too often we get so involved in what needs toget accomplished that we put ourselves on hold. It’s no wonder with all that we do that we don’t find the time to relax ornurture our bodies, mind and spirit. This lack of time often leads to feelings offrustration, overwhelm and sense of imbalance. Below I share some tips that willhelp you make the time that is necessary to take care of YOU!
Meal times – these are the times where we tend to run in circles, instead let’s plan.If you have to prepare school lunches, consider preparing a week’s worth andfreeze them. For lunches, and dinners double your recipes and freeze half of thosecasseroles, soups and burgers for another meal. Plan your meals and get your familyinvolved.
Treat yourself – this doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Meet a friend for coffee, join abook club, a craft club, etc. Consider doing something you’ve always dreamed of,such as skydiving, driving a race car or ballroom dance classes.
Schedule some time away with your significant other – this can simply be a lunchdate, or dinner date. Make arrangements for your children to be picked up fromschool or looked after so you can truly enjoy your time. A mere walk around thepark or going to see a movie will help you relax while spending important time withthe one you love. Try to also spend a weekend away together occasionally, after allto strengthen the relationship it is necessary to focus on our partners.
Organize quiet time at home – turn off the television or other distractions andsimply enjoy the peace. How about an at home spa treatment? This can be trulyenjoyable for you and if you have children, they will love it too. My kids love to giveus manicures and massages, even if they are not professionals. You’d be amazed atwhat some aromatherapy candles and soft music will do to ease your tension.
Go outside – sounds easy enough, right? You’d be amazed at how occupied we canget that we neglect to enjoy the fresh air. Try to get outside at least once a day, walkthe dog, or simply sit under a tree and enjoy the day. If you have children, take themto the park and enjoy their company.
If you find yourself overwhelmed or that your life is out of control, or youplace others before yourself, it is time to create some time and space for yourself.Taking this necessary time not only allows you to renew your energy it will also helpin the healing and finding the peace your mind and spirit requires. Remember if youdon’t care yourself, then you will be completely useless to those who depend on you.Honoring yourself helps you to discover your truth, and experience a sense of peace, wholeness, purpose and balance. There is so much value in getting clear about what you need to function at
your optimal level during that day. Whether you have kids, a demanding job, or arejust “so busy” there always is time for what is important to you. So the question is,how important is feeling well to you?Your non-negotiables are unique to you. Begin by asking yourself thesequestions: What lifts you? This is the stuff that results in a lost sense of time. It could be meditation, yoga, reading fiction or memoirs, dancing, spending time with certain people, writing, volunteering, music or concerts. What movement feels good to you?Our bodies are meant to move. Try morning stretches, bundling up andwalking outdoors, dancing, yoga, taking a class, or even laying down. We arewired to seek pleasure, not pain. Why move the body in a way that you despise?Sometimes the antidote to feeling “stuck” is as simple as moving the body to getenergy flowing. Movement can be medicine. How do you prefer to unwind?Putting pajama pants on, making some tea, renting a TV series, sitting in asauna, stretching, turning off distractions. What signals relaxation for you? Howmuch rest do you need? This is important. For some people the difference between 6 hours a nightversus 7 hours a night can make a big difference for energy levels throughout theday. There is no textbook requirement really. Some people feel their best at 5 hoursevery night. For other it is closer to 8 or 9 hours. What style of eating feels good toyou?Do you like to eat meals prepared at home? Do feel well with 3 meals a dayor with snacks in between? Do you prefer one meal in solitude? Do you prefer to eatwith friends and family? Is there a certain dietary theory that really resonates withyou, gives you energy, and nourishes your body? How do you center yourself?Again meditation, some kind of spiritual practice, affirmations, conversationwith grounded people, sharing a long hug with your spouse or your sweetie, playingor performing music, focusing on your connection to the world around you throughnature or prayer, can all be deeply nourishing. What is your “breaking-point” as faras being productive goes?Do you glaze over after 6pm? Are you most effective in the morning? Perhapsdesignating a time to turn your phone and computer off by a certain time can helpset healthy boundaries. What do you do that is strictly for the sake of pleasure andhaving fun?Things can get a little heavy when our serious side takes over. Think light.Who cracks you up? Are there blogs that you follow that bring a smile to your face?Playing with children, dancing in your living room, or allowing yourself to be agoofball are all just as nutritious as apples, kale, and quinoa. Now pick one thing you know helps you stay balanced. Don’t judge it. Go write in inyour planner for one week as a reminder. Then do it.Notice if your “non-negotiables” feel selfish to you. Chances are, they are not.Self-care is one of the first things to fly out the window, during times of busynessor stress. Remember, we are more effective when we schedule time for rest and
relaxation. When we give ourselves time to rest, we actually look forward to beingproductive or socializing. When we run ourselves down, we are always lookingforward to rest. Where is your balance? The moral of this story is that you can certainly flip the switch. A negativethought can quickly be turned around into a positive reinforcement. It’s up to eachand every one of us to ensure that any hint of negativity is purged from our thoughtprocess. Avoiding this process from the very beginning will help you live happierand healthier lives. It all begins with a positive mental attitude. Success is achievedwith positivity and from positivity healthy relationships are cultivated. What willyou choose to do today? Remember we all have a choice, will you wake up with asmile or a frown? The choice is yours.
